Jumping the Broom, and a Dickish Guest

The best moments are the ones you frame, but the difficult ones matter, too. In our real weddings series, we ask couples to share their wedding highs and lows.

BEST WEDDING MOMENT

Photography by @emmastud.

Being surrounded by so many of our family and friends. We “jumped the broom”—a beautiful African American wedding tradition—as a celebration of our new lives together, bringing family and community, our lives, and our cultures together. It was a stand-out moment for us to be able to bring our community into our lives and celebrate with them in a new way. Another highlight for us was having Chris’ dad, Winston, officiate our wedding. It was so meaningful to have his dad share his heart and bless our marriage.

WORST WEDDING MOMENT

Unfortunately, someone was maybe (hopefully?) intoxicated by the end of the night, and drew penises all over one of the pages of our guestbook. It was just one page, and luckily it was just a blank page set out, not bound in a book yet. Needless to say, we’re not putting that page in the guest book!
